Danelle has been coming to the studio since we opened, first as a dedicated Ashtanga student and then one of our Ashtanga teachers! Over time, her practice has grown from something purely physical to a deep spiritual practice that feeds into all aspects of her life.
Having trained in Mysore, India, Danelle's classes are grounded in the traditional lineage of Ashtanga Yoga with her own special approach that shares aspects of yoga beyond asana, leaving everyone feeling empowered in their body and practice.
Over lockdown, Danelle made the move to a gorgeous lil village just outside of Bristol, so it's been so lovely to have her back in the studio on Sunday mornings again, and to have this chance to catch up and share some of her thoughts with you all - enjoy! :)
What's the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
I meditate my way out of the covers. Yup, the first thing I do when I wake up is yoga in bed. A ritual that involves only a few very slow and gentle movements to greet the new day. It works magic to stop me from rushing into the morning. Also I don’t really work with props much in my practice, so all the pillows are very dreamy.
What does yoga mean to you?
It’s a way for me to make sense of and exist in this world. Self-discovery and transformation is the best way I can think of to sum up this big question.
Has and how has your yoga practice evolved this last year?
Ashtanga looks like the same practice every day doesn’t it. However my practice, including the reason I practice, constantly evolves. A daily practice of the same sequences has helped me come back to a deeper sense of home inside myself. Over the last year my practice has seen some shifts from asana into more pranayama, chanting and meditation.
What or who inspires you?
Mostly it would have to be nature. In nature we find every pattern and every shape. The combination of them represent life, or the fundamental structure of life, and therefore consciousness. I’m mesmerised by sacred geometry ( .. yoga teacher that studied maths so it kind of makes sense). It’s a way for my logical, more dominant side to get involved in my spiritual experience.
What are you most looking forward to this summer and for the rest of 2021?
In studio in person yoga of course! I think a lot of us have probably found it tough communicating online so much. Also t-shirts and bare feet. Taking time to rest more, sit longer and always to love more.
