Ashtanga at Trika: Tradition, with lots of light heartedness and fun in practice!

Ashtanga at Trika: Tradition, with lots of light heartedness and fun in practice!

Often when we see Ashtanga on the schedule, there's perhaps imagery of a certain type of practice that comes to mind.. we get that it can read a little intimidating! As a studio we are huge believers that there is a responsibility in how any practice is shared - and as sharers of our yoga practices with you all, it is so important to us that we are there to simply help guide you in how to embody that practice in a way that works for You. Not to align you with the practice, but for the practice to align with you in the ways that you need it, in that moment. 🙏🏽

Less "here is the way to do it", wayyy more "come as you are, we'll figure this out together".

Ashtanga Yoga consists of set sequences that, like all yoga practices, connect our movement to our breath. We settle into each posture for around 5 breaths, before moving to the next one. It is a practice that wonderfully balance mindfulness, strength, focus and flexibility - and we mean that in more than just a physical sense. ✨ We honour and respect the tradition of the practice in it's pace that keeps a soft focus through the practice, in it's strength both mentally and physically in the way the postures are linked together and sequenced, and it's balance in the way it encourages the intention in the way we move around the mat.

AND! We truly love the way it can be tailored to every single person and also the sense of light heartedness in the way this practice can be approached. The words 'set sequence', 'strength' and 'focus' by NO means make this practice inflexible, strenuous, or rigid - at Trika we really love exploring how we can use the Ashtanga sequence as a base to move from to tailor the practice to how you most need to practice it. 🙌

Yes for reaaaal - forget any notion that you need to be able to have a certain level of strength or flexibility (this applies to trying any style of yoga!) to be able to practice.

We definitely encourage you to explore your practice without any judgement. We believe yoga should feel good, challenge you in a healthy way, and ultimately leave you feeling more grounded, light, and joyful in being, well, You!

So what's up with Ashtanga? One of the beauties of Ashtanga is it's sequence that we slowly store into our physical and mental memory over time. The nature of this slowly becomes a moving meditation that really takes you out of your 'thinking mind' and is quite effective in quieting 'mental chatter'. It's an incredible way to clear your head after a long week, to build internal heat, release tension, and emerge feeling surprisingly calm, grounded, and centered.

We love sharing Ashtanga in a way that honours its roots and also celebrates the joy, fun, and lightness in the practice! Come feel about this style of Yoga with us at this times (and ways!) 😊
